Northwest Federal District of the Russian Federation

 Arkhangelsk Region
Arkhangelsk Region was founded in 1937 and has the area of 590 sq. km and 1 200 000 people population with 75% living in cities and towns. It is located in the Moscow time zone.
Kaliningrad Region
Kaliningrad Region is the only administrative subject of Russia that does not share common borders with any other Region and is separated from the main territory being a semi-exclave, since it is connected with Russia by maritime domains.
Komi Republic
The Komi Republic is an administrative subject of the Russian Federation. It was founded in 1921 and is a part of the Northwestern Federal District. The area is 415 000 sq. km with 958 500 people of population.
Leningrad Region
Leningrad Region is located in the north-west of Russia and is a part of the Northwestern Federal District. In 1708 on the territory of present Leningrad Region there used to be Ingermanland province that was later renamed into St. Petersburg province and after the 1917 Revolution into Petrograd province.
Murmansk Region
Murmansk Region is washed by the Barents Sea and the White Sea and extends across three peninsulas – Kola, Rybachiy and Sredniy. Several islands – the Ainov, the Seven, Velikiy and Kildin – also add to the territory.
Nenets Autonomus Area
Nenets Autonomus Area located in the north of the East European Plain is a subject of the Northwestern Federal District and borders with Yamalo-Nents Autonomous Area, Mezensky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Komi Republic.
Novgorod Region
Novgorod Region is an integral member of the Northwestern Federal District with the region area of 54 500 sq. km and population of 646 000 citizens with 70% living in towns and cities.
Pskov Region
Pskov Region was founded in 1944. In 1957 it was joined by a large part of former Velikolukskaya Region. Now the territory is 55 300 sq. km. with 696 392 population.
Republic of Karelia
The Republic of Karelia was founded in 1920 and is an integral part of the Northwestern Federal District. The area is 172 400 sq. km. The Republic is located in the north-west of Russia and borders with Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Leningrad and Vologda Oblasts and has a border with Finland in the north.
Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg is the administrative centre of the Northwestern Federal District and Leningrad Region. It is located in the same time zone with Moscow being 680 km far from it. The city was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great.
Vologda Region
Vologda Region was founded in 1937 and has an area of 145 700 sq. km and 1 218 000 population with 68% living in cities and towns.
